Quia Scriptores (latin: “for writers”) is a one day conference designed for Christian writers who are interested in improving their craft. Workshops led by accomplished Christian authors, editors, and publishers, offer something for everyone, from published authors looking to expand their platform to those interested in learning more about how to get started writing.

Keynote Speakers

Nick Harrison

Nick Harrison, literary agent with WordServe Literary, is the author of twelve books, including Magnificent Prayer, Power in the Promises, and four books in the One-Minute® Prayer series. For fifteen years Nick served as a senior editor at Harvest House Publishers, acquiring both fiction and nonfiction. Nick has a long history of championing new and unpublished writers. Cindi McMenamin

Cindi McMenamin is an award-winning writer and national speaker who helps women and couples strengthen their relationship with God and one another. She is the author of 17 books (all from Harvest House Publishers), including When Women Walk Alone (more than 130,000 copies sold), When  God Sees Your Tears, and When Couples Walk Together (co-authored with her husband, Hugh, a pastor). Cindi has appeared on hundreds of national TV and radio shows, inspiring women to let God meet their emotional needs, grow stronger through their alone times, and pursue their dreams with boldness. Now a certified Writing Coach, Cindi is helping aspiring writers become published authors, which she’s done in her “spare time” for the past 15 years. B.J. Taylor represents four magazines: Guideposts, Angels on Earth, Mysterious Ways, and All Creatures. She has sold more than forty stories to Chicken Soup for the Soul and two dozen to the Guideposts family of magazines. She has compiled her teaching at conferences across the United States into a book titled Writing True Stories: Using the Winning Formula P MS to a T. She won a spot at the Guideposts Writers Workshop in 2004, is an award-winning author, and has published numerous articles in Writer’s Digest, Romantic Homes, Victorian Homes, John Gray’s Mars and Venus in Love, and many other publications. Jennifer Thompson

Workshop: Personal Branding and the Three Pillars of Successful Book Marketing

Jeniffer Thompson is a personal branding expert and digital marketing strategist with more than 20 years experience in the publishing industry. She is an award-winning publisher, author, and speaker who is passionate about delivering strategy-rich content and actionable tools that educate and empower authors. Since founding her company, Monkey C Media, in 2004, she and her team have been creating award-winning book cover designs and author websites that integrate digital marketing strategies that work! With a BA in Journalism from SDSU, Jeniffer is an ardent believer in the power of storytelling—she is always looking for, or telling, a story. She believes that story has the power to heal, transform, and create community. She is a co-founder of the San Diego Writers Festival and serves on the board of the San Diego Memoir Writers Association. She is currently writing her own coming of age memoir.  Jeniffer is a rock climber and thrill seeker. Joel Ryan

Workshop: Understanding Perspective and Point of View: The Art of Writing Great Fiction

Joel Ryan has worn many hats in the arts and specializes in writing for children and young adults, receiving his MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Before returning to children’s and young adult fiction, Joel was a script reader in Hollywood and core trainer for Disney’s Youth Education Series, where he helped develop and oversee interactive educational programs on leadership, story, and marketing. He has also spent time writing for the church, creating immersive theatrical content for youth groups and Vacation Bible Schools and is currently a contributing writer for Crosswalk and Christianity.com. Joel has a passion for helping young writers find their voice and unlock their stories, and when he’s not working on his own fiction, he teaches writing and communications at Life Pacific University.

Marni Freedman

Marni Freedman (BFA, LMFT) is a produced, published, and award-winning writer. She graduated as an award-winning student from the USC School of Filmic Writing. One of her plays was made into a film, “Playing Mona Lisa,” and was produced by Disney. Marni is the co-founder and Programming Director for The San Diego Writers Festival, whose mission is to gather Southern California writers and creatives for a day of literary celebration, creative expression and most importantly, to promote diversity and inclusion for undeserved communities. She runs the San Diego Writers Network and is the programming director for the San Diego Memoir Association.

Marni is also a therapist for artists and writers. Her welcoming, easy-going nature and solid background are the underpinnings of what makes her such a popular writing coach across the country. Marni is a unique writing coach because she has a tool for almost everything. She has a way of taking complicated information and translating it into easy-to-grasp, step-by-step information. Her character worksheets and plotting devices have been met with rave reviews. She teaches writing workshops for UCSD Extension, conferences and retreats across the state and runs the Memoir Certificate Program at San Diego Writers Ink.
